Rubricarpet (2023)

Naast mijn werk als kunstdocent heb ik lange tijd een praktijk als grafisch ontwerper gehad. Mijn ‘ontwerpskills’ openbaren zich nu vooral in het onderwijsmateriaal dat ik ontwikkel, zoals powerpointpresentaties, lesbrieven, curriculumoverzichten en rubrics.

Rubricarpet is een design vloerkleed bestaande uit strakke zwarte lijnen en zachte kleuren. Het ontwerp lijkt volledig abstract, maar is in feite gebaseerd op een beoordelingsrubric zoals die in het onderwijs op de Master Kunsteducatie wordt gebruikt. Door de tekst en cijfers uit de rubric te verwijderen openbaart zich een esthetisch lijnen- en kleurenspel dat wellicht niet altijd opgemerkt zal worden in de alledaagse hectiek en spanning rond beoordelingen. Het Rubricarpet maakt het spanningsveld tussen het geplande en het uitgevoerde curriculum zichtbaar.

For a long time, I have had a practice as a graphic designer, in addition to my work as an arts educator. Now, my 'design skills' are mainly revealed through the educational material I develop, such as powerpoint presentations, handouts, curriculum visualizations and assessment rubrics.

Rubricarpet is a design carpet consisting of clean black lines and soft colors. The design seems completely abstract, but is in fact based on the assessment rubric we use at the Master of Education in Arts. By removing the text and numbers from the rubric, an aesthetic interplay of lines and colors is revealed, which students and colleagues may not always notice in the everyday assessment-Master of Education in Arts. The Rubricarpet shows the tension between the planned and the executed curriculum.
